“The legal definition of child pornography is, at best, unclear. In part because of this ambiguity and in part because of the nature of the crime itself, the prosecution and sentencing of perpetrators, the protection of and restitution for victims, and the means for preventing repeat offenses are deeply controversial. In Refining Child Pornography Law, experts in law, sociology, and social work examine child pornography law and its consequences in an effort to clarify the questions and begin to formulate answers. Focusing on the roles of language and crime definition, the contributors discuss the increasing visibility child pornography plays in the national conversation about child safety, and present a range of views regarding the punishment of those who produce, distribute, and possess materials that may be considered child pornography.
“During the early days of the so-called ‘war on drugs,’ possession of marijuana could sometimes lead to a decades-long criminal sentence. In time, the need for reconsideration, and proportionality in sentencing, became apparent. The contemporary sentencing approach to child pornography offenses, including possession, requires an analogous re-examination. This text does an outstanding job of addressing the rationale for sentencing in child pornography cases, and in suggesting the need for potential change, in a thorough, scholarly, and thought-provoking manner.”
—Fred S. Berlin, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

“Our modern digital world has increased exponentially the constitutional, social, and practical issues implicated by criminal laws and policies surrounding child pornography. This book provides a timely, balanced, and astute array of perspectives on a topic that all criminal law theorists and practitioners should be following closely.”
—Douglas A. Berman, Moritz College of Law, The Ohio State University

I’ve not read this yet…but I understand it has some insights, into misleading claims made by the government…

That first quote was powerful and then I was like “who could have said this” and read Fred S. Berlin and was like “oh, of course, the only person who can’t be reviled by anything at all.” Berlin is scientific to an extreme.

Berlin is an interesting character, for sure.

He doesn’t support making these things legal…but, he tends to be strongly against some of the most extreme reactions against such behavior.

Are you preventing my comments from appearing on OLF Steve? One aimed at this thread several days back, and no show. Not the first time this has happened either …

Of course not…In fact, I’ve been wondering about you, because it seems you’ve been so quiet, for a while now.

I’ve had a strange experience trying to post comments on Toms blog, too.

Do you still have a copy of the comment?

Just FYI…WordPress has been doing some behind the scenes work [“upgrades”] on it’s service…It seems to be causing miscellaneous gremlins in the system.

For example…the notification system has been unreliable…It should have notified me, that Tom approved my recent comment on his blog…but I got no such notification, despite the comment being approved and responded to [which should have also given me a notification].

I’ve also noticed some freezing and hanging, while I’m trying to make posts…edit and format them…

Your comment simply never showed up anywhere, at all…unless it somehow ended up in the spam, and got deleted…which, it certainly should not have…I’ve approved way more than enough of your comments, for the system to know better than to treat them as spam…

If you were marked as a spammer, this comment would not likely have come through…

      Are you using TOR?

Honestly…at this point, I just think some bugs have been released into the WordPress system, due to all the new coding work they’re doing.

They’re making a new post editor…Apparently, people on mobile devices wanted it…It’s some new…”block” editor…it comes off like a nightmare, to me…and I don’t care, so long as they don’t do away with the ancient and the current editors…and they don’t push the “block” monstrosity onto those who never wanted it…but I think they’re also messing around with various admin interfaces…and it’s hard to tell where they’re going to break something.

I wish they’d get it done with, and just stop…I’m tired of not knowing what I’m going to encounter, when I load up any of the admin pages.

OK, very relieved to hear that it is not you Steve … the paranoia that accompanies being minor-attracted unnerves me when this sort of thing happens.

What I will do is save all comments I make in future not least because I tend to put a fair bit of thought and effort into them. A further point is that the email through which I do WordPress sign-on is a Yahoo one; nauseatingly, Yahoo blocked my account after I made system changes several months back, and now it is unusable, so I have been forced to find a further email provider. Although I can still evidently post comments to WordPress (the recent problem excepted), I cannot receive emails from other WordPress users wanting to contact me.

        I’d never ban you, feinmann0. 🙂

It’s a strange time, right now…both of the two main places I engage with [WordPress and Twitter] are underperforming…and have been, for some time.

Not so much on Twitter [unless I intentionally author a themed thread of tweets]…but I save a copy of nearly everything I write in text files on my hard drive…I copy from there, and paste them into the posting form here.

I’m not so consistent with saving what I put in the comments section [I won’t save a copy of this comment]…But, everything I put serious effort into composing, is saved before it ever comes anywhere near a posting form…I’ve lost enough stuff, over the years.

Paranoia…I think that strikes even the best amongst us, sometimes.

At times I’ve reflected upon past interactions with others like me…which on the surface were positive…sometimes, even on the phone…Yet, I’ve never met this person face to face…It’s a strange sensation, knowing that one of them could have been a mole.

Not that I believe it’s true…Yet…Sometimes, the charade of moles can get elaborate.

Part of the battle, is in not allowing the moles to psychologically manipulate us, like this.

There’s been a number of times over the years…when I’ve come online and loaded up one of my daily resources [here and Twitter]…not entirely knowing if they were still going to be here…and the internet/service is lagging, badly…and I’m left sitting here in limbo…”waiting for the verdict”…often after a long day of work, with no possibility to check in and monitor things.

I’ve experienced behind the scenes shenanigans in the past…so, I know what it’s like to be chronically meddled with…and abruptly banned without notice, as well…

…Occasionally…I trot off into very spicy territory…not entirely sure if WordPress/Twitter will throw a fit over it, or not.
