“Insects could vanish within a century at current rate of decline, says global review…

The world’s insects are hurtling down the path to extinction, threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review.

More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles. The total mass of insects is falling by a precipitous 2.5% a year, according to the best data available, suggesting they could vanish within a century.

The planet is at the start of a sixth mass extinction in its history, with huge losses already reported in larger animals that are easier to study. But insects are by far the most varied and abundant animals, outweighing humanity by 17 times. They are “essential” for the proper functioning of all ecosystems, the researchers say, as food for other creatures, pollinators and recyclers of nutrients.

This topic is close to my heart but may be a little off the OLF radar. I thought it sufficiently important to flag the issues wherever I can … not least since the majority of mankind is either ignorant of, or wilfully turns a blind eye to, the natural crisis that has deepened over the past half century, a crisis that is clearly accelerating at a shocking pace.”

I’m not sure the human species is collectively smart enough, to pull it’s collective head out of it’s collective arse long enough…to see the forest for the trees, and realize we have vastly more pressing issues threatening us…than petty hysterics over “who likes the wrong pee pees”…all the endless gossip drama…and identity politics…

…But…we can hope.

I’ve had this sense in my gut for a number of years now…that all this nonsense…including the insane stupid laws, ultimately means nothing…because some sort of massive breakdown, is on the horizon…and I think it’s of the “natural disaster” form…

…It’s probably not a zombie apocalypse…[wouldn’t that be something?]…but extinction of the insects could fit that bill…and we could be looking at a scenario, much like what was represented in the movie “The Road”.

People have been so obsessed with “protecting the children”…and yet, they’ve been killing off their own children for decades, by helping to destroy the planet…being extraordinarily crappy stewards of planet Earth…

…Why does virtually nobody have a grounded perspective?

“Why does virtually nobody have a grounded perspective?”

Greed and ignorance promoted by a life spent in towns and cities hermetically sealed off from the natural world, I would suggest.
