MEPs condemn LGBT conversion therapy in appeal to European Commission…

Thanks to feinmann!

“More than sixty Members of the European Parliament have signed a letter to three European Commissioners, demanding a Europe-wide ban on so-called “conversion therapy” practices.

According to a report presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June, “conversion therapy” is an umbrella term to describe interventions of a wide-ranging nature, all of which have in common the belief that a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) can and should be changed.

The report says that young people are disproportionally subjected to practices of “conversion therapy,” with a recent global survey suggesting that 4 out of 5 persons subjected to them were 24 years of age or younger at the time and, of those, roughly half were under 18 years of age. “They constitute a highly discriminatory practice that violates the human rights of LGBT persons and which causes severe physical and psychological suffering to its victims.”

COMMENT from SUBMITTER:

No mention of minor attracted individuals as far as I can see. The EU is still free to discriminate and abuse members of this group whichever way they wish therefore?

How would a ban on conversion therapy affect Psychiatry consultancies and agencies such as Prevention Project Dunkenfeld in Germany, when treating minor-attracted people across Europe I wonder?”

Good question.

It would be appropriate if we got recognized equally…We should be recognized equally.

If they are at all sincere in caring about what constitutes “a highly discriminatory practice that violates the human rights of LGBT persons and which causes severe physical and psychological suffering to its victims”…then they should also protect MAPs this way…because it is no different for us, in it’s negative effects.

Interesting article and good comments – thanks feinmann and Steve. With the EU culture war with Hungary and Poland in mind, there is a contradiction within the ban. Is a man liking 14-year-old boys to be “converted” as a MAP (Sweden) or protected as gay (Germany)?

Protection only for some groups also yields jealous guarding, hence the reluctance to consider MAPs as having a sexual orientation.

Indeed Nada. To my mind, virtually impossible to impose a one-size-fits-all policy whilst there exists a patchwork quilt of age of consent ages, and at a time when Europe is so culturally and politically fractured. Hungary even appears to be removing some of the progress made by gays in that country over the past fifty years, for example: fifteen Billy Elliot performances at the State Opera House cancelled in 2018 after a government newspaper claimed that the show could turn kids gay. Poland is worse with its homophobic catholic church, and zero protection for gays in hate crime cases away from the workplace.

Humanity (correct term?) has got itself irretrievably stuck in its own bugger’s muddle when it comes to managing the full spectrum of natural laws that govern human sexuality. Such laws should be promoted and celebrated rather than subjected to unending vilification and prosecution.
