Well, back in Lula’s administration, from 2002 to 2010, never Brazilians were so happy. Everyone was working, economy was going great, public investment was strong, more colleges opened, hunger diminished and so on. He was going to win the elections in 2018, but, due to a political maneuver (which Glenn himself exposed in The Intercept), he could not run for president. And now, he is the only person capable of defeating Bolsonaro in 2022. If it’s not him, we will have Bolsonaro here for another 4 years.

People were sill generally happy when Bill Clinton was president…but he was corrupt as hell…and people still think well of him, in various circles.

Provided Brazil is going well, I don’t care, at all, about how honest the president is. Specially because, in Brazil, it’s difficult to find an honest politician. I admit that Bolsonaro is very honest, except when it comes to attacks on democracy. But is such honesty a strong argument in favor of him? At least in Brazilian politics, honesty matters little. Honesty does not put bread on your table, does not buy vaccines, does not build schools and I’m seeing that. A lot of crime accusations against Bolsonaro are not solid, even though accusations against his sons are. And what difference does it make? Three of my mom’s close friends died of covid, all in the same month, 4k+ people are dying everyday of it, unemployment rises, price of basic needs rises as well. Seriously, honesty does not matter here.
