Move over ACLU, FIRE is the New Champion of Free Speech…

“The expansion of the Foundation of Individual Rights in Education marks the end of an era, when free speech issues were the sole province of American liberalism

After years of planning, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, better known as FIRE, announced a major expansion Monday, moving “beyond college campuses to protect free speech — for all Americans.”

FIRE was the brainchild of University of Pennsylvania history professor Alan Charles Kors and Boston civil liberties lawyer Harvey A. Silverglate, who co-authored the 1999 book, The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America’s Campuses. To the modern reader the book reads like a collection of eccentric cases of students and teachers caught up in speech code issues, most (but not all) being conservative.

To take just one of countless nut-bar examples, Kors and Silverglate told the story of a professor in San Bernardino reprimanded for violating sexual harassment policies because, among other things, “he assigns provocative essays such as Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal,” as the court case later put it. This was apparently the “cannibalism” portion of the accusation that he delved into such subjects as “obscenity, cannibalism, and consensual sex with children.”

The book triggered such an overwhelming number of responses from other faculty members and students that the pair decided to set up an organization to defend people who found themselves in tricky speech controversies on campuses. They soon found they had plenty of work and, by 2022, enough of a mandate to expand beyond colleges and universities into America at large. According to FIRE CEO Greg Lukianoff, as quoted in a Politico story, the group has already raised over $28 million toward a $75 million “litigation, opinion research and public education campaign aimed at boosting and solidifying support for free-speech values.

As noted in another story I put out today, FIRE will be doing a lot of stepping into a role semi-vacated by the American Civil Liberties Union. I spoke with Nico Perrino of FIRE, producer and co-director of the excellent documentary about former ACLU chief Ira Glasser (see review here), to ask what the expansion would entail:”

Cause for optimism?…We shall see.

Do go read this.

At the time of this stream, a motive was not officially determined…So…potentially, this may not be connected to islamic extremism…

…But, it walks and quacks like a duck…So…this conversation is understandable, in this moment.

I agree that islamic extremists have no business migrating to other places…In fact, there isn’t any truly correct place for them to exist…and it’s ideal that they just don’t exist at all.

To be fair…I hold the same position on jewish, christian, hindu, buddhist, or any other form of religious extremism…

…There is simply no excuse for it to exist…anywhere at all.

It’s nothing more than bullies tormenting others.

“William Costello is a Ph.D. student studying Individual Differences and Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin under Dr. David Buss. His MSc dissertation conducted some of the earliest primary research investigating the underlying psychological profile of “incels” (involuntary celibates). William’s research is currently being peer reviewed.”

This is worth watching.

“I’m just going to the heart of the inferno”: Interviewing Alex Moyer, Director of “Alex’s War.”…

“The director of the controversial new movie about Alex Jones on media blindness, misleading labels, and America’s mental health crisis

Alex Moyer has now made two movies in a row, TFW No GF and Alex’s War, that sound too much like journalism for today’s media. Even though most reviewers seemed to know exactly what they thought about both subjects before they even saw the films, Moyer was criticized for not planting enough signs telling them — and audiences — what to think about disaffected loner men, or InfoWars villain Alex Jones. The Guardian review of TFW No GF was typical, saying the film:

Pretends 4chan and other gathering places for this particular subculture are mostly harmless, perhaps populated with a few bad eggs. (By “bad egg,” I of course mean mass murderers.)

The movie does nothing of the sort, instead capturing a story of alienation that’s been running through our culture for ages. Moyer’s version merely shows the phenomenon worsening and expanding. She takes characters reduced in panicked media treatments to two-dimensional monsters and renders a nonjudgmental, tautly edited Herzogian treatment of who they are and how they came to be that way.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been enough to prevent her from being called an apologist for everything from right wing violence to misogyny. Even without reviews, she’s taking in interest, with Alex’s War topping Apple pre-order charts as of this writing. I asked her about the genesis of both movies and how she’s handled the schizoid public response [Matt Taibbi]”

I’d very much like to watch this.

Alex Jones Must Pay $45.2 Million To Sandy Hook Parents…

“A jury in the civil suit against Alex Jones has determined that the online agent provocateur and supplement enthusiast must shell out $45.2 million in damages for the pain and suffering he caused the Sandy Hook families. This outcome arose independent of the widespread deplatforming and censoring that Jones has faced in recent years, and shows that sometimes “the system” DOES work the way it’s supposed to.

Jimmy and his panel of The Dive’s Jackson Hinkle and America’s comedian Kurt Metzger discuss whether this jury decision represents justice being done and shows that censorship is never the answer to “problematic” speech.”

This mirrors my own views.

Top Republican TRASHES Election Audit After Trump Betrays Him…

“Republican lawmaker Robin Vos, the speaker of the Wisconsin state assembly, finally denounced the ongoing 2020 election audit that HE personally approved after Donald Trump betrayed him. Vos was ready to cancel the audit after it initially “concluded” earlier this year, but Trump threatened to endorse his primary opponent if he did. So he kept it going, only for Trump to endorse his opponent before this week’s primary. Farron Cousins explains what happened.

Robin Voss, the Republican speaker of the Wisconsin state assembly has now come out very strongly against what we can only assume is the investigation into the 2020 election that he personally made happen. And Voss did this by publicly speaking out against the guy that he picked to run it. Michael Gman, who is a former conservative member of the Wisconsin state Supreme court. But the reason Voss is so angry, all of a sudden is because not only did Gman come out and endorse his primary opponent recently, but so did Donald Trump a week in fact, before Wisconsin’s primary, which for the record, Voss won, it was a narrow victory, but Vos prevailed. And once he prevailed knew that there was no longer a threat from these other people, man, did he let them have it? Here is what Robin Rob Novas had to say about Michael Gman.

Mike Gman is an embarrassment to the state. We asked two simple things. Don’t get involved in politics, and please try to make sure you focus on the investigation, not being on TV. He couldn’t help himself. And of course, he’s referring to the fact that Gman did actually record a robo call for boss’s primary opponent, um, endorsing him and telling people that Vos is a rhino don’t go vote for and blah, blah, blah. Again, attacking the very guy that’s paying you to conduct this sham of an election audit in the state of Wisconsin. Voss then of course turned his ire to Donald Trump. He said of Trump. He’d picked aside for somebody who literally just parachuted into the district and made it really close because there are obviously a large chunk of people who still think we should be looking backwards. Instead of four words, VO said his win proved lawmakers. Quote, don’t have to be a lap dog to whatever Donald Trump says.

Now I agree with you, but let me go ahead and clarify something for you there, Robin Voss, you were also a lap dog for whatever Donald Trump said. I’ve told this story many times here. And of course, because it’s relevant. I have to tell it one more time. Mike Gman again, conservative former member of the Wisconsin state Supreme court is conducting an election audit into the 2020 election results for the state of Wisconsin. He was hired last year by of course, Robin Voss, the Republican controlled assembly decided to do this. They’ve now spent over a million dollars, both VO and Gman have been held in contempt of court for refusing to turn over records. But in April of this year, something very interesting happened. Gman submitted what is basically a summary of his findings. Like the, the whole

Audit was about to end and gave said, ah, I couldn’t find any fraud. So Voss was prepared at the time to put an end to the entire audit, right? It’s over. We couldn’t find it. Sorry we tried bro. And then Donald Trump comes out and uh, actually had this to say, I understand some rhinos have primary challengers in Wisconsin. I’m sure their primary opponents would get a huge bump in the polls if these rhinos interfere. So basically Donald Trump came out on April 25th of this year issued this veiled threat to Robin Voss saying, oh gee, it’d be terrible. If uh, somebody were to come in there and endorse your primary opponent. That is, of course, if you cancel this election, you let it go on. Maybe nothing happens. Maybe everybody’s good. We all go home happy. And then of course, as I said, a week before, the primary, which happened this Tuesday, Trump came out and endorsed.

The opponent. Voss felt betrayed. He was betrayed. To be honest with you. And now you’ve cost your own citizens, a million dollars. You personally, Voss have been held in contempt. So you’re gonna have to deal with the legal ramifications of that. Gman is out there still trashing you and everything is falling apart. All because you bowed down and became a lap dog for Donald Trump. The same thing. You’re mad that other Republicans are doing. You did this to yourself, bud, and you deserve every horrible thing that comes along with it, including the betrayal of Donald Trump himself. Now you get to see how loyal he is to his lap dogs. And it ain’t fun. Is it.”
