Dementia spreads via connected brain networks…

01) Dementia spreads via connected brain networks

“Summary: A new brain mapping study allows for individual predictions of the progression of frontotemporal dementia.

Source: UCSF

In a new study, UC San Francisco scientists used maps of brain connections to predict how brain atrophy would spread in individual patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), adding to growing evidence that the loss of brain cells associated with dementia spreads via the synaptic connections between established brain networks. The results advance scientists’ knowledge of how neurodegeneration spreads and could lead to new clinical tools to evaluate how well novel treatments slow or block the predicted trajectory of these diseases.

“Knowing how dementia spreads opens a window onto the biological mechanisms of the disease — what parts of our cells or neural circuits are most vulnerable,” said study lead author Jesse Brown, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center and UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. “You can’t really design a treatment until you know what you’re treating.”

FTD, the most common form of dementia in people under the age of 60, comprises a group of neurodegenerative conditions with diverse linguistic and behavioral symptoms. As in Alzheimer’s disease, the diversity of FTD symptoms reflects significant differences in how the neurodegenerative disease spreads through patients’ brains. This variability makes it difficult for scientists searching for cures to pin down the biological drivers of brain atrophy and for clinical trials to evaluate whether a novel treatment is making a difference in the progression of a patient’s disease.”

Interview with Douglas Murray about The Madness of Crowds (ENG)…

01) Interview with Douglas Murray about The Madness of Crowds (ENG)

Thanks to feinmann0!

“The subject of Douglas Murray’s new book is the growing vehemence of public discourse. This phenomenon, emenating mainly from universities and the media, seems to allow only a certain set of convictions. Douglas Murray uncovers the religious nature of this development and describes the looming dangers in his interview with Roland Tichy and Achim Winter of the German magazine Tichys Einblick.”

COMMENT from SUBMITTER:

For me, Douglas Murray nails the problem succinctly summarised by one reviewer of this interview: “The contemporary flight from reason to the ideology of political correctness is a symptom of the decline of the West.”

This is an important interview.

01) Stunning handpan improvisation by Gabriele Pollina

“Check out this incredible display from Italian handpan (hang drum) musician Gabriele Pollina in London’s Leicester Square. September 2017. We’re so lucky to have some of the best artists in the world, performing in London!”

I almost bought a handpan, several years back. I wish I had, but some of them are quite expensive…even the mini ones.

I know I could have learned to do something, with one of these.

An Incomplete List of Books in My Library, in No Particular Order…

In_Self_Defense
….

Date: October 13, 2019

Most of these are physical books…a number of them are digital.

To my shame, I have not read all of these…but I intend to.

I left out most of the novels, like Stephen Kings Dark Tower series, or The Neverending Story, and the plethora of classic books I’ve downloaded…

I’ve also failed to include the masses of research papers, articles, books and whatnot, that I’ve downloaded and archived on my PC over the years…that would expand the list, greatly.

What is here, are books which I have at one time or another purchased…most of which I still own a copy of.

These lean very heavy into the realm of child sexuality, pedophilia and related social issues.

I cannot vouch for each book here…but I have found a lot of valuable reading and knowledge, within this collection.

Sadly, I am unsure where I placed every single one of these at, but trust I will eventually happen upon them in the future.

A Book Reading List:

Show Me!: A Picture Book of Sex for Children and Parents
– Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt (Author), Will McBride (Photographer) 1975

I don’t currently own a copy of “Show Me!”, but I once did. It was phenominal, for what it was. Though it’s still freely available for sale on Amazon, it should be noted that some jurisdictions in the U.S. [and around the globe] have passed laws which criminalize the purchase and ownership of this book.

Family wraps home in greenhouse to warm up Stockholm weather…

01) Family wraps home in greenhouse to warm up Stockholm weather

“The average temperature in Stockholm in January is -3°C (27°F). For Marie Granmar and Charles Sacilotto it can be much warmer thanks to the greenhouse that blankets their home.

“For example at the end of January it can be -2°C outside and it can be 15 to 20°C upstairs,” explains Sacilotto. He was inspired to build a house-in-a-greenhouse through his relationship with architect Bengt Warne who began designing the first Naturhus (Nature House) in 1974*.

Originally Sacilotto looked for an empty lot to build an entirely new Naturhus, but he eventually settled on an old summer house on the Stockholm archipelago. Using Warne’s design, he covered the small summer house, plus an addition, in 4 millimeter glass. The footprint of the greenhouse is nearly double that of the home, leaving plenty of room for a wrap-around garden, and since inside the bubble it’s a Mediterranean climate, the couple now grow produce atypical for Sweden (e.g. figs, tomatoes, cucumbers).

The favorite spot is the glass-covered roof deck. Since there’s no longer need for a roof, the couple removed it and now have a large space for sunbathing, reading or playing with their son on swings and bikes.

The greenhouse isn’t the only novel point to the Granmar-Sacilotto home. They are also completely independent from city sewage. Built by Sacilotto- an engineer by training-, the sewage system begins with a urine-separating toilet and uses centrifuges, cisterns, grow beds and garden ponds to filter the water and compost the remains.

* In the video, Granmar mentions architect Bengt Warne’s influence in the 1990s since this is the date he reached a larger audience with his book release.

Stacked cargo containers in New Haven’s “LEGO” apartments…

01) Stacked cargo containers in New Haven’s “LEGO” apartments

“Christian Salvati of Marengo Structures thinks shipping containers make great building blocks, and in time, he hopes it will become an affordable and quick method of building homes.

As full-scale R&D, in 2012, he built Connecticut’s first shipping container homes: a two-story duplex built from six containers. Two years later, he stacked higher using 27 containers to build a 6-unit apartment complex he hopes to rent to students in the New Haven area (the building is wedged between Yale and University of New Haven).

While containers are uniform, modular and easily sourced (Salivati buys from a depot in Newark, NJ), the building process is still slower and more expensive than it should be given the lack of codes for this type of building.

Salvati thinks that by sharing information, architects and builders can help improve both zoning issues and the currently steep learning curve that prevents containers from becoming a more universal modular alternative.
