“How is it that human beings have come to acquire language? Steven Pinker’s introduction to the field includes thoughts on the evolution of spoken language and the debate over the existence of an innate universal grammar, as well as an exploration of why language is such a fundamental part of social relationships, human biology, and human evolution. Finally, Pinker touches on the wide variety of applications for linguistics, from improving how we teach reading and writing to how we interpret law, politics, and literature.”

“Organised disinformation about the Covid-19 crisis has degraded public understanding of the crisis and threatened the reputation of credible vaccines and health policy.

This talk looks at the broad structures and recent history of computational propaganda – the use of algorithms, automation and human curation to distribute misleading information over social media.

Dr Howard reviews the latest evidence about social media use during our current health crisis, and reports on the very latest themes in Russian information operations about its invasion of Ukraine. He discusses the opportunities for using social media to deepen democracy and ‘build back better’.

There are hundreds of different causes of dementia, and this lecture will look at how they are diagnosed and where we are with treatment and prevention. What can you do to reduce your risks of getting dementia, and – if you do get it- what’s the best treatment?

The Bible and Western Culture – Nietzsche and the Death of God…

I’ve been reading a Kindle version of Nietzsche’s The Anti-Christ…

…The guy strikes me as an arrogant, mouthy, pompous ass, speaking from his proverbial “ivory tower”, where it comes to his people skills and understanding of others…as well as the social workings around us all.

…That said…I still appreciate his critique on religion…I just think on a personal level, the guy was a piece of shit, with a feeble grasp on broader perspective…

…Sure…he didn’t care if the masses he looked down on would have gotten wiped out…until the day his “superior” sort was the only sliver of humankind left…and he then had to get off his own ass, and do the myriad of jobs and chores an army of common folk do daily, just to make his own existence possible…

…Then all could have seen just how “superior” he really was…as he flounders at 99.999% of it all.
