The De-Population Bomb…

“Recorded on June 14 at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC.

In 1970, Stanford professor Paul Ehrlich published a famous book, The Population Bomb, in which he described a disasterous future for humanity: “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now.” That prediction turned out to be very wrong, and in this interview American Enterprise Institute scholar Nicholas Eberstadt tells how we are in fact heading toward the opposite problem: not enough people. For decades now, many countries have been unable to sustain a #population replacement birth rate, including in Western Europe, South Korea, Japan, and, most ominously, China. The societal and social impacts of this phenomenon are vast. We discuss those with Eberstadt as well as some strategies to avoid them.

See…the thing about “America being so glorious”…is that it all depends on who you are, where you’re coming from, what your needs are, and whether those holding power accept or target you.

For a lot of us…this is an extremely different, absolutely terrible America…Because we’ve spent our lives being kicked, trampled and preyed upon by the very system itself…

Those born into a system that caters to them, have the luxury of being able to wear rose colored glasses…

…For others who are not allowed to fit in and thrive…who live under constant threat…America is a hell hole.

It’s not that complicated.

It’s only a mystery, to those who have their heads stuffed up their own rear ends.

The “glory of America” is a fantasy…Look a tiny bit behind the surface, and you’ll find out it is a damn dirty lie.

What to do about the national pessimism in the USA?…

For starters…how about we stop demonizing and othering each other, and stop treating each other like shit?…

…That would be a great starting point…

…Get all the self serving blood suckers out of government…That would also be a tremendous step forward.

…Make sure everybody has their basic needs met…That would definitely change most peoples perspectives.

Teach and employ critical thinking skills, empathy, kind social skills and charity.

Equally protect all demographics under the law…Bring all demographics into the process of creating, maintaining and abolishing laws.

You want people to have hope?…Do everything you can, to give them stability and security.

If you’re not on board with these things…then you are not serious when posing the question, of how to combat widespread despair.

And to end…Oh, Good Freaking Grief!…

…We finally have institutions who are trying [however imperfect it sometimes is] to infuse some level of humanity into the culture…and this bozo is calling it “forty years of poison”…acting like “his good kind” have had to endure “four decades” of living under the whip and heel of oppression…or some such bullshit…all because it is hoped they will be decent and tolerant?

…No…his short comment about “perversion” did not go unnoticed…

…What an asshole.

I had higher hopes for this conversation…The subject matter really is quite interesting…But, alas…I’m ending up sharing this, more for my response comments, than any substance in the video…What a shame.

The Hoover Institute…an unfortunately conservative organization, has this tendency to drag interesting conversations back down to shitty, often demonstrably wrong, conservative talking points…

…I’m not going to remove them from my database of content sources [I do use an RSS reader also]…but every time I see they’ve published something new, I pause and contemplate whether I want to invest the time in watching/listening/reading it…because they always pull the predictable out of their hat…and conservative talking points aren’t normally so clever…or honest.

“How is it that human beings have come to acquire language? Steven Pinker’s introduction to the field includes thoughts on the evolution of spoken language and the debate over the existence of an innate universal grammar, as well as an exploration of why language is such a fundamental part of social relationships, human biology, and human evolution. Finally, Pinker touches on the wide variety of applications for linguistics, from improving how we teach reading and writing to how we interpret law, politics, and literature.”

“Organised disinformation about the Covid-19 crisis has degraded public understanding of the crisis and threatened the reputation of credible vaccines and health policy.

This talk looks at the broad structures and recent history of computational propaganda – the use of algorithms, automation and human curation to distribute misleading information over social media.

Dr Howard reviews the latest evidence about social media use during our current health crisis, and reports on the very latest themes in Russian information operations about its invasion of Ukraine. He discusses the opportunities for using social media to deepen democracy and ‘build back better’.

A lecture by Philip Howard

The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:
https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/covid-disinformation

Gresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. There are currently over 2,500 lectures free to access. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest minds.”
