Conversation between Batya Ungar-Sargon, Deputy Opinion Editor of Newsweek, and Ethan Katz, Professor of History, UC Berkeley, as they dive into complex and controversial issues — raised by Ungar-Sargon’s new book — about American journalism and its role in shaping race, class, religion, and culture in America. “Recent and dramatic breakthroughs in our understanding of the body will profoundly change the experience of being human in the coming century.

We may soon be eating bespoke diets for our microbiome, taking drugs to improve our brains and genetically modifying our unborn children to prevent disease. Join immunologist Dan Davis as he explores how radical and disconcerting possibilities have been made real thanks to the ingenious technologies and decades-long collaborations of scientists worldwide.

Daniel M. Davis is Professor of Immunology at the University of Manchester and author of two previous books: The Beautiful Cure, shortlisted for the 2018 Royal Society Science Book Prize and a book of the year in The Times, Telegraph and New Scientist, and The Compatibility Gene, longlisted for the 2014 Royal Society Science Book Prize and shortlisted for the Society of Biology Book Prize. His research, using super-resolution microscopy to study the immune system, was listed in Discover magazine as one of the top 100 breakthroughs of the year. He is also the author of over 140 academic papers, collectively cited over 13,000 times, including articles in Nature, Science and Scientific American.

This talk was livestreamed on 6 July 2021.”

“In this Discourse, Tom Scott talks about science communication in the age of social media, how to be popular on the internet, and dealing with a world where view counts are often more important than truth.

He has a popular YouTube channel with over 1.6 million subscribers and more than 325 million video views as of June 2019.

In more than fifteen years of publishing on the internet, Tom has visited the High Arctic, passed out in a centrifuge, and somehow got three million people to watch a video about why the British plug is a great invention.

This talk and Q&A was filmed in the Ri on 27 September 2019.”

Post-Truth: Why Facts Don’t Matter Anymore…

“Why we can’t seem to agree on what’s true when it’s easier than ever to check.

This video was filmed at a meetup in Stockholm, Sweden on Dec. 9, 2016. Huge thanks to everyone who attended – I had a great time. Sorry to those of you I missed, especially Lund and Gothenburg.”

I do strongly disagree with big tech companies bludgeoning themselves into private groups, and private people’s blogs/pages, just to make it appear as though they can dictate what is “true” and what is “false”.

They’re every bit as susceptible to spreading false, grossly biased information, as anybody.

In addition…it’s a complete nuisance and it pisses me off, how YouTube keeps dumping it’s gray, “ministry of truth” boxes directly under a video, where the video title and description would normally go…It’s anger inducing being forced to scroll past these irregular presence, and I’ve accidentally clicked on the same link [YouTube has a massive hard on for CDC Covid-19 links at present], way to fucking many times, when I had no intention of clicking on a link they intentionally put in the way…at the most annoying place possible.

I have a routine with YouTube…grab the URL, scroll down a smidgen and grab the description…grab the title…Those fucking boxes are nothing but a pain in the ass.

Complete asshole moves, on the part of these big tech companies.

Viral mutation and evolution…

….

Date: March 27, 2021

“Viral evolution

adenine, cytosine, uracil, guanine

Darwinian evolution

Species undergo random mutation

Making most less fit

But making a few more fit

Fit means compete, survive, reproduce

Natural selection will ‘select’ the more fit

Viruses usually become less virulent over time

Increased virulence / transmissibility

Mutations that increase transmissibility

Mutations that can avoid antibodies

Mutations that can avoid vaccination defences”

Loving Animals: Historical Reflections on Bestality, Zoophilia and Post-Human Love…

“What is meant by ‘love’ between human and nonhuman animals? Why is sex with animals such a taboo? It is only in very recent years that some people have begun to undermine the absolute prohibition on zoosexuality.

Are their arguments dangerous, perverted, or simply wrongheaded? What does it mean to love nonhuman animals? More pertinently: what does it mean to love?

This book launch will look at the history of debates about human sexual encounters with other species.

A lecture by Joanna Bourke

The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/loving-animals

This is what I would like to see far more of, for MAPs.

Why cant we MAPs have content of this style and tone?

It’s kind of mind blowing, who all gets to have objective discussion out in the open, and who does not.
