01) Librivox: The War of the Worlds

“Librivox recording of The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells.

H. G. Wells wrote The War of the Worlds in 1898, when there was much speculation about life on the planet Mars. The book is considered to be one of the first science fiction novels. In the story, an English gentleman narrates the events of a violent and fast paced Martian invasion.

The frightening images of people fleeing from gigantic tripod machines and the prospect of life under Martial rule have served as a bottomless well of inspiration for popular culture. The novel has served as a template for many derivative or inspired works, including comics, countless books, a tv series, several films, a bestselling musical, and the famous Orson Wells broadcast. Overall, The War of the Worlds has become an early milestone in and inspiration for the invasion genre.

The novel demonstrates Wells’ typical pessimistic outlook on human nature and offers a good deal of critisism on society and people’s ignorance and vanity. The War of the Worlds can be read as an indictment of European colonial actions around the globe at that time – with which the injustice of the Martian invasion can be compared. Wells has since been credited with predicting quite a number of technologies, such as laser-like rays, industrial robot-like machines, and chemical-warfare.

01) Screenwriting – How Kubrick Adapted The Shining into a Cinematic Masterpiece

“Whenever I think of The Shining, I’m always amazed by the sheer number of iconic moments in a single movie. So, I wanted to take a look at the writing process and see how we ended up with such a masterpiece of cinema. Now, there have been plenty of great videos on The Shining as well as videos specifically about the script, but I want to go deeper. What exactly is happening from a storytelling perspective?

What was it like to collaborate with Kubrick on this screenplay? How did the movie wind up so different than Stephen Kings original novel? How close did they stick to the screenplay during production? What were Kubricks thoughts on horror? All that and more on this episode of Making Film…”

01) The Real Dracula – Vlad The Impaler

Video Gone

“Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (1431–1476/77), was a member of the House of Dr?cule?ti, a branch of the House of Basarab, also known, using his patronymic, as (Vlad) Dr?culea or (Vlad) Dracula. He was posthumously dubbed Vlad the Impaler, and was a three-time Voivode of Wallachia, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462, the period of the incipient Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. His father, Vlad II Dracul, was a member of the Order of the Dragon, which was founded to protect Christianity in Eastern Europe. Vlad III is revered as a folk hero in Romania as well as other parts of Europe for his protection of the Romanian population both south and north of the Danube. A significant number of Romanian and Bulgarian common folk and remaining boyars moved north of the Danube to Wallachia, recognized his leadership and settled there following his raids on the Ottomans.”

Since this selection was gone before this post got published…here is a fun consolation.

WTF HAPPENED TO HELLRAISER?:

I liked the first two Hellraiser movies, even if they are a bit dated…

…Everything following those is pretty bad. I haven’t watched every single one, yet…but, I have the six pack of all the bad ones…and what I’ve seen, I can only ask the question…”Why?”…

They could have done something decent with this franchise.
