“A Georgia state representative — who is also an anesthesiologist and the wife of the former federal Health and Human Services secretary — asked at a public hearing Tuesday about the legality of quarantining HIV patients to stop the spread of the virus that causes AIDS. […] The LGBQT advocacy group GLAAD on Friday demanded an apology from Price. “We have come a long way in how we understand and talk about HIV as a nation, and comments like those made by Georgia State Representative Betty Price fly in the face of that progress, and of basic decency,” the group’s president, Sarah Kate Ellis, said in a written statement. It is “reprehensible” that the comments were made by a physician and a lawmaker, Ellis added. […] The CDC estimates 1 in 7 people who have HIV don’t know they are infected. Those carriers can then unwittingly infect their sexual partners or, in the case of drug users, individuals with whom they share needles or syringes.” Since the video is not working…I cannot seem to get an original context, in which the original question was posed… Something else strikes me here, though. AIDs is a very touchy subject for us sexual minorities…most especially us homosexual ones…It’s fair to say, none of us likes what the AIDs epidemic has done to us, as a minority and as a community…both directly, and indirectly. Is it wrong of me to say…that I don’t like the politically correct monster, that so much of the LGBTQ-etc community has become?… …Am I the only one who asks, why groups like GLAAD believe “we don’t have to confront these questions, anymore”?…or, seemingly, presume that some forms of dialogue are “below them”? …Why is GLAAD’s sense of outrage, and demand for an apology, newsworthy? …Has GLAAD become so big headed, that it’s only focus is on the public image of certain sexual minorities, while shaming anything that might potentially taint them in any way? It seems to me…a group like GLAAD should have enough resources, competence and standing, that they could muster up something far more potent, than some demand for an apology… These types of incidents are excellent opportunities to educate the public, after all… Is shaming someone into giving an apology, honestly going to do anything of value? If people like Betty Price have genuine questions…you know what?…they should be asked, openly and honestly…and they should be open to the response they get. Only people and groups who fear the findings surrounding any specific issue, act to stop other people from asking the questions… GLAAD should not be in any position to fear this question…should it? There is also another point… HIV and AIDS still exist…They are far less deadly, than they were when they first became known…but they’ve lingered on for decades…and they are genuine social problems for everyone, sexual minority or not. Just because you can live a reasonably long and healthy life after being infected, doesn’t mean that they are no longer a problem. When discussing what to do about the uncontrolled spread of this disease…it’s not necessarily out of line, to discuss a quarantine policy…or discuss whether or not such a policy is even on the table… Would such a policy pass in the U.S.?…Not likely…Not openly, anyway…Though it almost certainly exists, for a state of emergency… …But you know what?…If there are people infected with this…and they’re spreading it, with no awareness or intent to stop…somebody needs to intervene… …Perhaps GLAAD should save it’s outrage, for cases where people aren’t being responsible with safeguarding their infectious diseases? I’m tired of the outrage culture we live in… …I’m tired of the groups, who think their own public image trumps everything else. |
