“Zuckerberg’s Meta gets sued by more than 40 US states for harming children’s mental health
“Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens,” the lawsuit from the states said. “Its motive is profit, and in seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its social media platforms.”
According to Meta Platforms, it is committed to help young people and their families be safe online. It claims to have released more than 30 solutions for doing the same. Former Meta employee Frances Haugen came forward in 2021 as a whistleblower and said that the business was intentionally preying on impressionable young people to increase profits.
The lawsuit claimed that Meta obtains personal data from users under the legal age limit who haven’t given the required consent.
Numerous lawsuits have been filed against Snap, TikTok, and Google, alleging that these companies are to blame for the social media addiction that has caused these kids and young adults to experience anxiety, despair, eating disorders, and insomnia.
COMMENT from SUBMITTER:
How about parents taking responsibility for the mental health of their offspring, by insisting upon outdoor playtime via neigbourhood kids groups for example, by limiting the time kids spend online, or by spending more quality time with their kids? How about education authorities preventing pupils from accessing social media platforms whilst at school? Why is never the fault of the parent?”
Parents shoulder a lot of the fault, yes.
…I have a hard time weeping for Meta…but I’m not convinced this is fair.
